Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

 

WHEREAS:               National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (L.E.A.D.) is an event sponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. (C.O.P.S.) and other partnering organizations in support of law enforcement officers nationwide; and

 

WHEREAS:               The Lawrence Police Department, Douglas County Sherriff’s Office, Kansas University Public Safety Office and Kansas Highway Patrol provide a tremendous public service to the community; and  

 

WHEREAS:               The Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that nationally on average, over 50,000 officers are assaulted and over 14,000 officers are injured in the line of duty each year; and

 

WHEREAS:               According to a study from the Badge of Life organization, between 125 and 150 police suicides occur each year; and

 

WHEREAS:               The Officer Down Memorial Page, Inc. reports that 117 line of duty officer deaths have occurred nationally as of December 2014; and

 

WHEREAS:               The citizens of Lawrence are invited to participate in L.E.A.D. and show their support for Law Enforcement in the community by thanking a police officer, wearing blue clothing, shining a blue light from their home or sending a card of support; 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim January 9th, 2015 to be

 

“Law Enforcement Appreciation Day”
