Project Description

With the acquisition of the former Farmland Industries Nitrogen Plant, now known as Lawrence VenturePark, the City is bound by consent order (Case No. 10-E-94 BER) to follow the environmental remediation procedures outlined in the Corrective Action Decision (CAD) authored by the Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE) signed March 3, 2010. The CAD requires the remediation of nitrogen impacted ground water seeping from the sandstone hill in the north central part of the site known as the Central Ponds.  When the site was still operating as Farmland Industries this location (Figure 1 - Location Map) included open air settlement ponds.  Some of the contents of these ponds leached into the sandstone hill and are now surfacing from its southern side slope. The CAD stipulates the construction of an interceptor trench(s) to remediate this surfacing nitrogen impacted ground water.

Project Funding

The funding source for the Interceptor Trench will be funded entirely from the environmental remediation fund obtained with the acquisition of the site and has been approved by the Kansas Department of Health & Environment.
