Agenda Items 12/2/2014: Traffic Safety Commission, Traffic Calming on Lake Pointe Drive between Clinton Parkway and Candy Lane |
Background
At the August 4 Traffic Safety Commission meeting, the Commission heard a request for TRAFFIC CALMING on Lake Pointe Drive between Clinton Parkway and Candy Lane. Lake Pointe Drive is classified as a “local” street in a residential area. The speed limit on “local” streets is 30mph in accordance with State Law. Traffic data obtained May 27-28 found approximately 735 vehicles in a 24-hour period and an 85th percentile speed of approximately 36mph. The City’s Policy permits Traffic Calming on a “local” street if the 85th percentile speed is 5mph or greater over the speed limit.
Traffic Safety Commission Action
At the Traffic Safety Commission meeting, no one from the public addressed the Commission concerning this item. The Commission recommended, on a vote of 6-2 to recommend TRAFFIC CALMING on Lake Pointe Drive between Clinton Parkway and Candy Lane; one Commissioner voted in opposition indicating that it would be very low on the priority list and another Commissioner voted in opposition indicating that enforcement should be able to take care of it.
Funding
Although no funding is currently available for traffic calming, this project will be prioritized and added to the list of approved projects until funding is available.
Action Request
It is recommended that the City Commission concur with the recommendation of the Traffic Safety Commission, if appropriate.
