RE:

Agenda Items 12/2/2014: Traffic Safety Commission, Multi-Way Stop at Overland Drive and Queens Road

Background

At the October 6 Traffic Safety Commission meeting, the Commission heard a request to establish a MULTI-WAY STOP at the intersection of Overland Drive and Queens Road. A temporary MULTI-WAY STOP was installed at the intersection in August. Overland Drive and Queens Road are both classified as “collector” streets. With the opening of the Sports Pavilion Lawrence at Rock Chalk Park, traffic is expected to significantly increase on Overland Drive, including a Bus Route between the Pavilion and Wakarusa Drive. Stop signs have been in place on Overland Drive since it was constructed. One of the criteria in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for a MULTI-WAY STOP installation is, “Locations where a road user, after stopping, cannot see conflicting traffic and is not able to negotiate the intersection unless conflicting cross traffic is also required to stop.”

Traffic Safety Commission Action

At the Traffic Safety Commission meeting, no one addressed the Commission concerning this item. The Commission recommended, on a vote of 8-0, to recommend establishing a MULTI-WAY STOP at the intersection of Overland Drive and Queens Road.

Action Request

It is recommended that the City Commission concur with the recommendation of the Traffic Safety Commission, if appropriate.
