RE:

Graphic design options for recreation center naming

Background:

At the May 6 City Commission meeting, Commissioners directed staff to work with three naming choices for the new city recreation center at Rock Chalk Park.  The three choices were: Lawrence Sports Pavilion, Lawrence Freedom Fieldhouse and Lawrence Fieldhouse. The city worked with a local graphic designer to provide design options for each name provided.  The following is a combination of all designs provided.  The city revised a few of the designs based on comments received from commissioners through the process.  All variations are included for review in this memorandum.  Color options are provided but greyscale and black/white versions would be created for final design.

As the Commission knows, the city has retained Premier Sports Management to solicit sponsors to provide compensation to the city for certain naming rights and sponsorships.  Whether the city will find an entitlement sponsor for the facility is not known at this time, however, it is a possibility that the best recommendation for an entitlement sponsor for the facility will require some adjustment to the formal name and graphics for the facility.

Once a name and design is chosen, city staff will continue to work to develop the needed marketing materials and communications tools for the new recreation center.  Staff is currently working to develop a website and social media strategy for the facility in preparation for opening during the first week of September.

A few designs provided were not compliant with the city’s established identity guidelines for the use of the city’s ‘flame’ icon.  Staff would not recommend the designs below.

Recommendation:

Direct staff as appropriate.
