Office of the Mayor

Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   This June, in honor of National CPR Week, the American Heart Association is calling on all Americans to learn how to give Hands-Only CPR by watching a simple one-minute video at heart.org; and

WHEREAS:   Hands-Only CPR (CPR with just chest compressions), since 2008, has been proven to be as effective as CPR with breaths in treating adult cardiac arrest victims; and

WHEREAS:   Heartbeats for the Heartland, an organization here in Lawrence, has a mission to save more cardiac arrest lives by providing free Hands-Only CPR and AED training to the citizens and visitors of Lawrence; and

WHEREAS:   Four out of five cardiac arrests happen at home.  Statistically speaking, if called on to perform CPR, the life you save is likely to be someone at home: a child, a spouse, a parent or a friend; and

WHEREAS:   Don’t be afraid; your actions can only help.  If you see an unresponsive adult who is not breathing or not breathing normally, call 911 and push hard and fast on the center of the chest.  The life saved may be your own.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the week of June 1 – 7, 2014 to be

CPR WEEK

in the City of Lawrence.
