RE:

Landmark Nominations for 1300 Haskell Avenue and 1340 Haskell Avenue

Background

In accordance with Chapter 22, The Conservation of Historic Resources Code, the Historic Resources Commission (HRC) held public hearings for 1300 Haskell Avenue and 1340 Haskell Avenue. After a consideration of the nomination material and public comment, the HRC determined that each property met criteria identified in 22-403. The HRC adopted Resolution 2014-04 and 2014-05 recommending designation of 1300 Haskell Avenue and 1340 Haskell Avenue as Landmarks on the Lawrence Register of Historic Places and directed staff to draft the necessary reports to the City Commission.

Landmark Process

Chapter 22 requires the City Commission to consider the application of a landmark nomination at a public hearing.  The public hearing may be during a regularly scheduled meeting.  The City Commission may approve an ordinance designating a nominated structure as a landmark in accordance with the findings of the HRC.

If the City Commission denies the nomination, subsequent nomination attempts shall not occur within three years, or without a change of ownership of the property, whichever occurs first.
