RE:               Outdoor Pool Chiller Donation from Kansas Athletics

Please include the following item on the next available City Commission agenda:

Description

The City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department requests Commission approval to waive the formal bidding process for the purchase of a new pool water cooling system for the Lawrence Outdoor Aquatic Center. The KU Athletics Department has raised funds to donate the needed equipment and installation to help provide proper training conditions for their swim team.  The equipment will help cool the water during the hottest times in July and August. Typically, water temperatures will exceed 90 degrees depending on daytime highs and nighttime lows.  High water temperatures can be unhealthy for athletes training and uncomfortable for general swimming.  The KU swim team (along with 3 other teams) uses the pool to train its athletes in the summer.

Funding

The estimated cost to purchase and install the cooling system is $40,000-45,000. Kansas Athletics has selected a specific type and brand of cooling system and will reimburse the City for all equipment and installation costs to install this unit.  The City will purchase and install the equipment to assure it is incorporated properly in the existing mechanical systems at the pool.

Action Request

The City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department staff requests the City Commission authorize the City Manager to enter into an agreement with KU Athletics, Inc. for donation of a water cooling system for the Lawrence Outdoor Aquatic Center with a total cost not to exceed $45,000.
