RE:

Establishing no parking on Steven Drive

Background

On January 6, 2014, the Traffic Safety Commission (TSC) heard a request to establish NO PARKING along the north side of Steven Drive between Lawrence Avenue and Wellington Road. Steven Drive is classified as a “local” street in a residential area and is paved approximately 26 feet wide. Parking is currently permitted along both sides of Steven Drive.

Traffic Safety Commission Action

At the TSC meeting, two (2) members of the public addressed the Commission with respect to this request. The individual that submitted the request amended his request to include only the areas adjacent to the intersections with Lawrence Avenue and Pamela Lane; the other individual that spoke was opposed to the original request, but supported the amended request.  A motion to recommend establishing NO PARKING on the north side of Steven Drive 50 feet east and west of Pamela Lane and on both sides of Steven Drive for 50 feet east of Lawrence Avenue carried, 5-2.

City Commission Action

At the February 25, 2014 City Commission Meeting, the City Commission directed staff to contact the adjacent property owner on the south side of Steven Drive adjacent to Lawrence Avenue. The property owner stated that they would not be in favor of the restriction on the south side of Steven Drive. In addition, state law prohibits parking within 30 feet of a “stop” sign; the stop sign on the north side of Steven Drive is approximately 27 feet east of Lawrence Avenue; therefore, parking is prohibited for 57 feet by state law.

Action Request

It is recommended that the City Commission concur with the recommendation of the Traffic Safety Commission for parking restrictions along the north side of Steven Drive 50 feet east and 50 feet west of Pamela Lane.
