Re:

Motorola XTS 5000 Portable Radios

Background:

In 2009 the Lawrence Police Department utilized the Law Enforcement Byrne Grant to purchase a quantity of Motorola XTS 5000 portable radios. Those radios were deployed to small groups of employees in order to facilitate the transition from the older generation of devices to the newer ones. The City of Lawrence purchased enough Motorola portable radios during 2012 to equip all remaining sworn personnel in order to comply with the federally compliant radio system that is currently being installed.  The department needs to continue the process of maintaining current radios and acquiring devices for use in the future.

Discussion:

The department needs to acquire ten Motorola portable radios which will allow us to utilize the expanded functions of the new radio system. The purchase will also allow us to re-task radios we already have for the 2014 Police Recruit Academy class.  The cost of the ten radios using the state of Kansas contract $48,684.20.

Funding:

The necessary funds to cover the costs of purchase of five Motorola portable radios, outlined in the attached quote, has been identified in the Equipment Line Item #001-2-2110-6005. This Line Item was previously designated to address equipment needs within the department.

Action Requested:

Police Department staff requests approval from the City Commission to authorize the purchase of the ten Motorola radios as quoted under the state contracted price in the attached document totaling $48,684.20.
