RE:

3 December 2013 City Commission Agenda Item

Lawrence Avenue

Traffic Calming

Background

On November 4, 2013, the Traffic Safety Commission heard a request for TRAFFIC CALMING on Lawrence Avenue between 27th Street & 31st Street. A reduced speed limit had been requested in October that was denied, however, the person making the request realized that the request should have been for TRAFFIC CALMING. Approximately 58% of the frontage along this portion of Lawrence Avenue consists of residential lots with the houses facing Lawrence Avenue; therefore, this area meets the minimum criteria for consideration of TRAFFIC CALMING as provided in the City’s Traffic Calming Policy.

Traffic Safety Commission Action

At the Traffic Safety Commission meeting, no members of the public addressed the Commission in support of, or in opposition to the request; however, Commissioners noted that they had suggested that the speed limit request be changed to a traffic calming request since that is a better fit. A motion to recommend TRAFFIC CALMING on Lawrence Avenue between 27th Street & 31st Street carried, 8-0. There are no funds specifically specified for traffic calming; therefore, if approved, this location will be placed on the City’s list of approved traffic calming projects waiting for funding.

Action Request

It is recommended that the City Commission concur with the recommendation of the Traffic Safety Commission, if appropriate.
