RE: |
19 November 2013 City Commission Agenda Item Montana Street & Park Hill Terrace Traffic Calming |
Background
On October 7, 2013, the Traffic Safety Commission heard a request for TRAFFIC CALMING at Montana Street & Park Hill Terrace. Both streets are classified as local streets in a residential area and are paved approximately 24 feet wide without sidewalks. Traffic data collected September 17-18, 2013, found approximately 160 vehicles in a 24-hour period and an 85th percentile speed of 31.45mph. Therefore, this location does not meet the minimum criteria for consideration of traffic calming devices as established by the city’s Traffic Calming Policy.
Traffic Safety Commission Action
At the Traffic Safety Commission meeting, two (2) residents spoke in favor of the request, noting that there are a lot of children and dog walkers in the area and vehicles cut-through the neighborhood both ways to avoid the traffic signal at 23rd Street & Louisiana Street. In addition, one (1) individual had submitted an e-mail correspondence prior to the meeting supporting the request. A motion to recommend denying the request for TRAFFIC CALMING at Montana Street & Park Hill Terrace carried, 7-1 (the no vote was made in order to ensure that the item would be on the City Commission’s regular agenda).
Action Request
It is recommended that the City Commission concur with the recommendation of the Traffic Safety Commission, if appropriate.
