RE: |
3 September 2013 City Commission Agenda Item 11th Street & Delaware Street Crosswalk and Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon |
Background
On August 5, 2013, the Traffic Safety Commission heard a request to establish a CROSSWALK and PEDESTRIAN HYBRID BEACON at the intersection of 11th Street & Delaware Street. Traffic data collected July 16-17 found the 85th percentile speed of traffic on 11th Street to be 34.4mph, which would require a gap in 11th Street traffic from 625 feet east of Delaware to 625 feet west of Delaware in order for a pedestrian to safely cross the street.
Traffic Safety Commission Action
At the Traffic Safety Commission meeting, no citizens appeared to speak to this item. There was very little discussion by the Traffic Safety Commission and a motion to recommend denying the request carried, 7-2. The two commissioners in opposition expressed concerns with this intersection being adjacent to a city park and the significant distance both east and west to a safe crossing.
Action Request
It is recommended that the City Commission concur with the recommendation of the Traffic Safety Commission, if appropriate.
