Re:

August 27, 2013 City Commission Meeting

BACKGROUND

The City of Lawrence purchased enough Motorola portable radios during 2012 to equip all sworn personnel in order to comply with the federally compliant radio system that is currently being installed.  The department currently has nine shelved radios available for assignment. The 34th basic recruit Academy, which began June 3, 2013, has thirteen new Officers and each will need a radio prior to their academy graduation and deployment to Patrol.

DISCUSSION

The department needs to acquire, at a very minimum, four Motorola portable radios in order to equip this class for duty.  Additionally, it would be prudent to maintain at least one additional radio as an emergency back-up and for use when a radio is sent to the company for repair or maintenance. The cost of the five radios using the state of Kansas contract plus additional discounts is $20,158.46.

FUNDING

The necessary funds to cover the costs of purchase of five Motorola portable radios, outlined in the attached quote, has been identified in the Patrol Equipment Line Item #001-2-2120-4203.

ACTION REQUESTED

Police Department staff requests approval from the City Commission to authorize the purchase of the five Motorola radios as quoted under the state contracted price with additional discounts, in the attached document totaling $20,158.46.
