RE:	Sunlite Science and Technology Economic Development Request

Please place the following item on the City Commission agenda for August 6, 2013:

Receive request from Sunlite Science and Technology, Inc. for a fifty percent (50%) property tax abatement on property at 4811 Quail Crest Place, Lawrence, Kansas.  Refer to Staff for analysis, the Public Incentives Review Committee (PIRC) for recommendation and establish August 27, 2013 as a date for a public hearing on the request. 

Background:

The City is in receipt of a request from Sunlite Science and Technology, Inc., a Lawrence-based company that has been a tenant in the Bioscience Technology Business Center (BTBC) facility, for a 50% property tax abatement on an existing building located at 4811 Quail Crest Place.  Sunlite is a company that has developed patented LED lighting technology and is ready for its next phase of growth, graduating from the BTBC.  Sunlite has submitted a letter regarding its request and also an economic development application. 

Next Steps:

The next steps regarding the request are to refer the request to staff for analysis and to the Public Incentive Review Committee for a recommendation.  Staff suggests setting a public hearing date of August 27, 2013 for the City Commission to consider the request.
