RE:	City Commission Goals Discussion

At your June 4, 2013 study session the Commission conducted a discussion of Commission goals.  The discussion was very helpful to staff and will assist in focusing efforts and resources on key Commission priorities.

Under our existing Economic Development goal, there was strong Commission emphasis on a marketing plan for the former Farmland property (including renaming the property) and finding tenants.  Commissioners were also interested in:

· vocational training opportunities

· expanding economic development thru arts and the cultural arts district

· retiree attraction

· growing the local sales tax base

Under our existing Public Safety goal, there was strong Commission interest in next steps toward a new consolidated police facility, with discussion on property/site acquisition.  There was also some Commission discussion concerning the request for additional 911 dispatchers.

There was also Commission interest in:

• City/County cooperation/consolidation opportunities
• Safety net for social services, including funding/debt assistance for Lawrence Community Shelter
• Horizon 2020 review and update
• City employee recognition
• Storm shelter improvement opportunities
• Not reducing City fund balance
