RE:

Library Storage Lease

The Lawrence Public Library is preparing to move operations into the former Borders Building at 700 New Hampshire, where the library will reside during construction at the 707 Vermont site. Because 700 New Hampshire is a significantly smaller building than 707 Vermont, the library will move a portion of its collection into storage, which will be accessed on a regular basis as materials in storage are requested by patrons.

Library staff has identified 720 E 9th Street #2 as the best location for storage of their collection. The City Attorney has negotiated the attached lease with the property owner, 720, L.L.C., and the library requests City Commission authorization for the city to enter into that lease on behalf of the library.

The lease would give the city possession of the building from January 2, 2013, to June 1, 2014, with options to extend for up to six more months. The total rent payments would be $30,375 (or $1,687.50 per month) for the initial lease period. The rent would be paid out of the bonded library project costs.

ACTION:      Authorize the city manger to sign a lease agreement with 720, L.L.C. for the lease of 720 E 9th Street #2, for a total payment of $30,375, for use as a storage facility for the Lawrence Public Library during construction at the current library site.
