Advisory Board Meeting Minutes

November 13, 2012

I.             Meeting called to order by Chair Caldwell

 

II.           Approval of the July minutes-- Motion to approve July 2012 minutes by Dawson and seconded by Loos.  Motion carried 4-0. 

 

III.         Concerns of Board – None at this time.

 

IV.          Graduate Intern – Jordan Brown – Introduction – Brown is currently interning with Parks and Recreation under the direction of Roger Steinbrock.  He has also had the opportunity of assisting various departments within the City.  Brown is attending the University of Kansas where he is working toward a Masters in Public Administration.   

 

V.            Firefighters Remembrance Park-- McSwain – Shaw recommended the park located at 19th St. and Haskell Ave. be named the “Firefighters Remembrance Park.”  Dawson made a motion to present the recommendation to the City Commission, Loos seconded it.  Recommendation will go to City Commission for final approval. Motion carried 4-0. 

 

VI.          David Corliss – City Manager – Presentation – Corliss reviewed the upcoming priorities for 2013 concerning the economy and infrastructure developments. 

 

VII.        Updates on LSV/Rock Chalk Park – Commission agenda ---Nov. 13 6:30 p.m. – Shaw shared with the Advisory Board the floor plan that would be presented to the commission for approval to start formal agreements committing the city to the Rock Chalk Recreation Center.  

 

VIII.      Staff reports

                                          i.Recreation/Golf Revenue/Expense Report – Shaw reported golf revenue is up approximately $90,000 compared to this time last year.  Recreation revenue is doing very good.  Expecting to be at approximately 108 percent above our projected revenues for the end of the year.   

 

                                         ii.    Parks/Projects Report – Hecker reported holiday lights are installed and ready to go.  KTA roundabout landscape in North Lawrence has been completed.  A few of our parks have received new playground equipment/mulch.  The Roosevelt fountain in South Park had to be dismantled and repaired due to corrosion in the pipes. 

 

                                    iii.    Marketing Report – Steinbrock reported the Winter/Spring brochure has been distributed.  OrganWise program is now visiting preschools within the area along with class sessions that are scheduled in the brochure.  The department video has been updated.
