WHEREAS: Alzheimer’s is a disease that is accompanied by symptoms of memory loss called dementia. 5.4 million adults in the United States suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and a new sufferer is diagnosed every seven seconds; and
WHEREAS: The dementia related symptoms that accompany diseases such as Alzheimer’s may include loss of mental function in areas such as: language, memory, visual and spatial abilities or in judgment. There is no existing cure for Alzheimer’s and dementia but promising studies focusing on lifestyle treatments are being led by researchers in our region. Bridge Haven Memory Care in Lawrence, Kansas focuses on caring for individuals with dementia in a smaller, less confusing family-style setting. We continue to advocate for better treatments and for a cure.
WHEREAS: The 13th day of November is the 10th annual National Memory Screening Day, a day to evaluate individuals for memory loss and educate caregivers about causes and resources; and
WHEREAS: The month of November has been proclaimed as National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, a month to recognize the need for more research and assistance in dealing with the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert J. Schumm, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of November 2012 as
in Lawrence and urge all citizens to extend their support for those struggling with Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia and their loved ones.
