RE:

Transit for Proposed New Recreation Center

The City Commission is evaluating options regarding a proposed new recreation center at its meeting on November 13.  During prior meetings, there has been a question regarding how individuals with limited transportation options would be able to get to a new recreation center on the west side of Lawrence.

Should the City Commission direct staff to proceed with a new recreation center on the west side of Lawrence at either proposed location, the new facility would be served with public transit via the Lawrence Transit System. At that time, existing routes would be adjusted to provide service to a new facility.  This link would provide direct access to one of the system’s four transfer locations at 6th and Wakarusa. In doing so, access would be available throughout the community.

It should also be noted that the Lawrence Transit System currently serves the Outdoor and Indoor Aquatic Centers, as well as the future location for the Lawrence Community Shelter, as an example of providing transit options for recreation facilities.
