RE:

Proposal regarding use of displaced tress at the Library site

Please place the following item on the November 6, 2012 consent agenda for the City Commission meeting:

Accept the proposal regarding use of the displaced trees at the Library site, if appropriate.

Background:

The City of Lawrence has received a proposal regarding the trees that will require displacement as a result of the pending library construction project.  Mark Jakubauskas and Matthew Burke are generally proposing that the trees be salvaged and then be made available to artists who submit proposals through a juried process.  The pieces crafted by artists would then be a part of an exhibition and auction event with the pieces to be auctioned off to benefit the Friends of the Library.

Currently, BA Green, the construction manager on the Library project, has indicated that site plans for the project are out for bid. BA Green has indicated that the site plan package will require the contractor to save the trunks of any of the displaced trees on the site that are greater than 8 inches.  These trunks would then be stockpiled.

Several of the proposals submitted for the public art portion of the library project envisioned reuse of the trees for their proposal.  At this time, none of the proposals that include using the reclaimed wood are being actively discussed by the committee reviewing the proposals.

Brad Allen was originally contacted regarding this proposal and the proposal has been shared with the Library Board.

Requested Action:

Accept the proposal regarding use of the displaced trees at the Library site, if appropriate.
