RE:               Basketball Court Replacement – Veterans Park

Project Description

It early October, it was discovered that the basketball courts in Veterans Park were beginning to experience some settling and heaving issues. Through the next two weeks, the courts were monitored and then closed on October 12, 2012 due to the increasingly unsafe playing condition of the courts. It appears that there is some type of old foundation or footing that is under the courts, and due to the dry weather, it is now pushing up through the courts.

The only known fix for this type of court failure is to tear them out, compact the sub-grade, and install a new court surface. A contractor is currently working on the tear-out and compaction issues. Staff recommends using the unit price bids received in 2012 for concrete finishing work to reinstall the basketball courts. Elite Construction Services was the low bidder for this work in 2012. Using this pricing, the estimated cost of the new basketball courts and connecting concrete sidewalks is $25,000.

Project Funding

This project would be funded by using Sales Tax Reserve fund.

Action Request

Authorize the City Manager to sign purchase requisitions to Elite Construction up to $25,000 for installation of new concrete basketball courts and connecting sidewalks at Veterans Park.
