Arts Center to receive energy efficient lighting retrofit

Throughout the month of August, Public Work Department and Lawrence Arts Center staff will be replacing inefficient lamps with high efficiency lamps in the track and recessed lighting fixtures throughout the facility.  208 total bulbs will be replaced, resulting in significant energy and cost savings. Replacement of the bulbs is expected to save $3,771/yr in energy costs, paying for themselves in 2.56 years. Please see the attached report from Eileen Horn, Sustainability Coordinator, for more information.

June building permits

The Building Safety Division issued 224 building permits in June, with total construction for the month valued at $8,739,320.  Total permit fees assessed for the month were $75,820.  Staff issued 16 permits for new residential construction in June, all for single-family dwellings.  This compares to eight permits issued for new residential construction in June last year, seven single-family dwellings and one duplex.  Please see the attached memo for more information.

Miscellaneous Pump Station Improvements – UT0919CS

The Department of Utilities and general contractor Wildcat Construction have completed construction of pump stations 12, 22, and 27 included in Priority Group II of the project as shown on the attached map. The project included the reconstruction of the existing pump stations from the original vacuum prime systems to submersible pump systems, as shown in the attached photographs, complete with dedicated utility and access easements, improved access driveways, new or rehabilitated wet wells, new valve vaults, discharge piping, electrical service connections, and City supplied programmable logic controls.

The completion of this portion of the project has served to improve the overall sanitary sewer system reliability to the pump stations’ respective service areas as well as decreasing the long-term maintenance liability to the City. These improvements also bring the pump stations into compliance with all current regulatory requirements including floodplain, KDHE minimum design standards, and OSHA safety standards.

Wildcat Construction was given notice to proceed on November 01, 2011. 210 calendar days were allowed per the contract and an additional 32 calendar days were granted due to construction change orders. The project met the requirements for completion as of June 29, 2012 in accordance with the allotted contract time.

The project was awarded to Wildcat Construction in the amount of $624,740.00 and change orders, to accommodate additional work necessary to successfully complete the project, were executed in the amount of $35,923.10 for a total construction cost of $660,663.10. This final construction cost represents a 30% savings over the projected construction costs of $952,700.00 established at the onset of the project for these pump stations.
