Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:  The City of Lawrence and Iniades, Greece became Sister Cities in November 2009; and

WHEREAS: Friendships have been strengthened throughout this three-year Sister City relationship which continues to strengthen the bonds between our two different communities and our respective residents; and

WHEREAS:  This relationship grew from a shared cultural interest between our two communities through the University of Kansas Summer Theatre Program and continues to be a foundation for exchange and learning; and

WHEREAS: Dimitra Pitsikou was, and continues to be, an integral supporter for the creation of a formal Sister City relationship between Iniades and Lawrence; and

WHEREAS: During the November 2009 visit to Lawrence by the Greek delegation, Dimitra provided a crucial role in connecting our two cultures through translation and coordination of the delegation; and 

WHEREAS: Her continued support and dedication to the Sister City program is an invaluable asset and today, I am honored to designate Dimitra Pitsikou as an honorary citizen of Lawrence, Kansas.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert J. Schumm, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby call on the citizens of Lawrence to recognize Dimitra Pitsikou for her work to establish and maintain a Sister City program with the City of Lawrence, Kansas.
