WHEREAS: For the second time in her academic career, high school senior Trei Dudley has earned the honor of Boys & Girls Club’s “Kansas Youth of the Year” and recently won the regional competition for “Southwest Region Youth of the Year” in Dallas, Texas and is now heading to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national competition in September; and
WHEREAS: The “Kansas Youth of the Year” award is given to a student for their outstanding contributions to their family, school or community and recognizes that many challenges and obstacles must be overcome in order to put community before self; and
WHEREAS: Trei started attending Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence in elementary school, where the club staff and mentors encouraged her participation in youth development programs. Trei volunteered with the organization through junior high and she now serves as a staff member at the center; and
WHEREAS: Trei is active in the community and volunteers with the Ballard Center, LINK and Family Promise. Additionally, at Free State High School, she serves as a board member for Can We Talk?, and is a cheerleader and editor of the school yearbook; and
WHEREAS: Trei has earned $11,000 in scholarships thus far through her “Youth of the Year” competitions and will now compete against four other regional “Youth of the Year” winners and have a chance to meet with President Barack H. Obama in the Oval Office in September. If she wins the “National Youth of the Year” award, she will receive a $50,000 scholarship for college;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert J. Schumm, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, June 12, 2012, as
and call upon all citizens of the City of Lawrence and Douglas County celebrate and honor Trei for her work and accomplishments in Lawrence and throughout her community.
