RE:	KaBOOM! Grant Award – Signing Letter of Agreement

Background:

In March 2012, the City applied for a KaBOOM! grant to update the playground equipment at John Taylor Park, 200 N. 7^th Street, where the current playground equipment is in need of replacement (see attached pictures). The project’s mission is to create an enjoyable play space for children in North Lawrence. The Parks & Recreation Department has been working with the neighborhood association, and will continue to work with them in implementing this project. On June 1, 2012, the City was notified by KaBOOM! that it has been awarded $20,000 for this project.

Project Funding:

The KaBOOM! grant award is $20,000 and will go directly towards the purchase of new playground equipment from one of KaBOOM!’s preferred vendors. The City has budgeted $10,000 of matching funds for a total of $30,000 for the anticipated project cost.

Timeline:

The first step towards receiving the grant award is to sign the Letter of Agreement and return it to KaBOOM! by June 18, 2012. The City has until June 4, 2013 to complete the project.

Action Requested:

Authorize the City Manager to execute the Letter of Agreement with KaBOOM! and any other paperwork for grant receipt.
