RE:	Shotgun start at Valor Awards Golf Tournament

On Friday, May 4, the city received a request (see attached email) from Lawrence Chamber of Commerce to fire a blank from a shotgun for a “shotgun” start at the Valor Awards Golf Tournament on Friday, May 11, at Alvamar Golf Club. The City Commission received and approved a similar request for the Penny Jones Golf Tournament in 2011. If the Commission wishes to authorize this, staff recommends suspending enforcement of City Code Section 14-407, which prohibits the discharge of firearms within the city, for this event.

ACTION:      Approve the suspension of enforcement of City Code Section 14-407, prohibiting the discharge of firearms within the city, for a “shotgun” start at the Valor Awards Golf Tournament on Friday, May 11, 2012, at Alvamar Golf Club.
