Recognition

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:  On Saturday, March 31, 2012 over 2,000 University of Kansas students will gather to volunteer their time, talents and sweat equity to give back to the Lawrence community; and

 

WHEREAS:  Over 165 Lawrence homeowners and community organizations will be a beneficiary of the students’ efforts which include yard clean—ups and other household or facility needs; and

 

WHEREAS:  The BIG Event is a student organization that was created in 2011 from a partnership between Student Senate, Center for Community Outreach, and Student Union Activities as a means to bring all campus groups together in a collaborative fashion; and

 

WHEREAS:  The City of Lawrence recognizes that our community is strengthened when we come together as a team to accomplish projects that provide wide-spread benefits to many of our residents, especially those who are unable to accomplish the work themselves; and

 

WHEREAS:  The BIG Event is an excellent example of how the University and City of Lawrence can benefit from a positive ‘town-gown’ relationship and achieve goals that are mutually beneficial for the University of Kansas and Lawrence community.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Aron Cromwell, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby recognize Saturday, March 31, 2012 as

 

“The BIG Event Day”

 

in Lawrence, Kansas and encourage all residents of the City of Lawrence to look for ways to give back, today and every day, to the community that we all call home.
