RE:

6 March 2012 City Commission Agenda Item

NO PARKING; Seminole Dr. between Kasold Dr. & St. Andrews Dr.

Background

On February 6, 2012, the Traffic Safety Commission heard a request to establish NO PARKING along one side of Seminole Drive between Kasold Drive and St. Andrews Drive. Seminole Drive is classified as a “local” street and is paved 26 feet wide with parking currently permitted along both sides of the street and there have been no reported crashes along the street during the past three (3) years. The request came from a resident at Drury Place who indicated that the Drury Place van had difficulty exiting their driveway with vehicles parked on both sides of the street. The adjacent businesses and residences on Seminole appear to have sufficient off-street parking and it was indicated that most of the parked vehicles are related to the KU Continuing Education offices on the west side of St. Andrews Drive.

Traffic Safety Commission Action

At the Traffic Safety Commission meeting, two members of the public spoke in support of the request (one representing Drury Place and a resident on the south side of the street) and suggested that the restriction be placed on the south side of the street; no one appeared and spoke in opposition to the request.  A motion to table the item and ask KU to control their employees and/or visitors failed for lack of a second.  A motion to recommend approval of the request carried, 6-1, with one member opposed who didn’t want to penalize adjacent property owners.

It is recommended that the City Commission concur with the recommendation of the Traffic Safety Commission, if appropriate.

Action Request

Pending the Commissions discussion, adopt Ordinance No. 8712 if appropriate.
