SAB attendance at Green Wichita event

Dale Nimz informed the SAB about the upcoming 2012 Kansas Preservation, Energy and Sustainability Conference (website) held on January 25th–28th. He plans to attend the conference and will report back to SAB at the February meeting.

Douglas County Local Food Policy Council presentation

The Local Food Policy Council (LFPC) completed their report. Daniel Poull and Eileen Horn went over the highlights of this report (presentation).

Daniel Poull mentioned he would give up his seat on the LFPC if another SAB member was interested. Since Daniel’s term with SAB ends in December this year, SAB may choose to send someone else to represent SAB on LFPC. No one volunteered for this.

Staff Report: Waste Reduction and Recycling Division

Kathy Richardson emailed the Waste Reduction and Recycling Division report to SAB. In addition, she informed SAB of the following:

- City staff is currently negotiating a contract with Ripple Glass for implementation of a drop-off glass recycling program.

- The 12th and Haskell Recycle Center informed City staff that they are only accepting scrap metal and aluminum cans now. They no longer accept glass, paper, and plastics for recycling. This change has been noted on the City’s website and brochures.

Sustainability Coordinator report

Eileen Horn addressed all items on the Sustainability Coordinator report. She will bring more information to the next SAB meeting regarding the electrical vehicle grant and also mentioned that the Lawrence Complete Streets report may be back on a City Commission meeting agenda in January or February next year.

Miscellaneous announcements and/or public comment

Sarah Hill-Nelson mentioned it was nice to see the SAB presentation information in the City’s newsletter, The Flame.

Daniel Poull suggested that SAB continue to invite Commissioners to board meetings.

Matt Schwabauer, a Lawrence citizen, raised concerns about the environmental impact of fracking (hydrofracking). He wondered what the SAB thought about fracking and if it would be in SAB’s purview to advice the City Commission on this practice. The SAB briefly discussed this topic and decided to postpone discussion to a future meeting.

Meeting adjourned at 7:41 p.m.

Next meeting: January 11th, 2012 at 5:30 p.m.
