Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:       February 28, 2009 marks forty years of women’s sports at the University of Kansas; and

WHEREAS:       In 1968, in recognition of the rising interest in women’s athletics and the organization of programs nationally, the University’s Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation was authorized to initiate an intercollegiate Athletics program; and

WHEREAS:       Over the past forty years, the women’s athletics program has produced numerous conference championships and twenty-one Hall of Fame female athletes and women’s sports coaches;

WHEREAS:       Women’s athletics started as, and remains to this day, an opportunity for women to achieve excellence in academic, athletic, and personal pursuits;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael Dever, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim Saturday, February 28, 2009, as

“40 Years of Women’s Sports at the University of Kansas”

And encourage citizens of Lawrence to attend the University of Kansas Rowing Boathouse Open House on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Burcham Park to show community support and recognition of 40 years of women’s sports at the University of Kansas.
