Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:       It is estimated that in 2009, over 195,000 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed; and

WHEREAS:       The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities, and beyond; and

WHEREAS:       In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research; and

WHEREAS:       Kansas Women’s Basketball and Kansas Athletics will work to raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer when it participates in the WBCA Pink Zone initiative on Sunday, February 22, 2009;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael Dever, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim February 22, 2009 to be

“THE WBCA PINK ZONE INITIATIVE”

And encourage citizens of Lawrence to attend the Kansas Women’s Basketball game on Sunday, February 22, 2009, where Kansas Athletics will donate $1.00 toward breast cancer research for every person in attendance.
