RE:

Lawrence Arts Commission Percent for Art Recommendation

Please place the following item on a future City Commission agenda for consideration:

Percent for Art Project - Sculpture for Fire/Medical Station No. 4 by Actual Size Artworks

Project History

The proposed sculpture was selected from among 40 entries from across the United States that was submitted in response to a Request for Qualifications sent out in July 2006.  The selection committee was comprised of 12 persons including city staff, members of the Arts Commission, neighborhood representatives, artists and Kansas University representatives.  The committee reviewed the entries and selected 3 finalists.  The finalists were invited to visit Lawrence and meet with the committee on December 1, 2006.    On December 8, 2006 the committee met again and was unable to reach decision on a final proposal for the project.    A plurality recommendation was submitted to the Art Commission.  The Arts Commission received the report from the committee and voted to recommend one of the three finalists for the project to the City Commission (attached).

The Actual Size Artworks team plans to create “Beacon”.   Beacon is a sweeping vertical structure that also uses the ground plane and the quality of light as sculptural elements.  It is interactive so that visitors to the Fire Station will be able to walk through it as a gateway to the station, and it is also responsive to the passage of daylight into night.  The artistic design of Beacon is reflective of the mission of the firefighters.

The sculpture will be located near the southeast driveway entrance to Fire and Medical Station No. 4.  Two photos of the proposed sculpture are attached.

A public unveiling of the sculpture is planned for late summer 2007.  The total project budget is approximately $38,000.

Project Status.

The Lawrence Arts Commission voted 9-0 at its December 13, 2006 meeting to recommend the proposed sculpture titled “Beacon” by Actual Size Artworks (Gail Simpson and Aristotle Georgiades) to the City Commission for approval.

Action Request.

The Lawrence Arts Commission recommends that the City Commission authorize the City Manager to enter into an agreement with Actual Size Artworks to complete the Percent for Art Project for Fire and Medical Station No. 4.
