REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR YOUTH BASKETBALL APPROACHING
 
LAWRENCE - The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department announces the
deadline for registering for youth basketball is Wednesday, Sept. 25.
 
The youth basketball program provides opportunity for children to
develop skills in an organized, competitive, yet recreational setting
during the school year. Children will  develop basic skills and the
fundamentals of basketball. They will also learn fair play, teamwork and
sportsmanship.
 
Registration forms are available at all Lawrence Parks and Recreation
community recreation centers, which include the Community Building, 115
West 11th St.; East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 East 15th St.;
Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 West 27th St. and South Park
Recreation Center 1141 Massachusetts St.

PRAIRIE PARK NATURE CENTER RECEIVES GRANT FOR EAGLE CAGE
 
LAWRENCE - The Prairie Park Partners, a non-profit organization in
support of the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Prairie Park Nature Center,
has received a grant from the Westar Energy Foundation for the expansion
of the birds of prey exhibit at the nature center.
 
The $5,000 grant will help the nature center expand its raptor display
to include an eagle cage and a flight cage for its new barn owl. The
nature center has applied to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to
acquire a live bald eagle.
 
"The gift from the Westar Foundation greatly assists us in educating our
visitors about birds of prey," Marty Birrell, nature interpretive
supervisor, said. "The eagle is so symbolic and loved across the
country. It will be nice to be able to house an eagle on more than a
temporary basis, so everyone young and old can learn about eagles."
 
The Westar Energy Green Team, which is a group of Westar employees and
family members who volunteer and assist with environmental projects each
year, will provide offer assistance of materials and labor in addition
to the grant from the Westar Foundation.
 
Once the cage is complete, the nature center will meet the standards for
housing an eagle on a permanent basis.
