Improvements begin on Ousdahl; Transit System announces re-routes

(LAWRENCE, KS) - Contractors will begin work on Ousdahl Road on Tuesday,
September 3.  Ousdahl Road will be closed to through from 31st Street to
33rd Street.  The work should be completed in approximately two months,
weather permitting. The recommended alternative route to and from the
area is the use Iowa at 33rd Street.

Improvements planned for Ousdahl Road include widening at the
intersection with 31st Street, the addition of a left turn lane and the
installation of a traffic signal.  

The widening of the Ousdahl Road marks the beginning of improvements to
31st Street from Ousdahl to Iowa and at the intersection with Iowa.  The
improvements to the area are being made to get drivers to destinations
safely and efficiently and to improve the flow of traffic in an attempt
to reduce traffic jams.

The improvements will limit traffic movements in the coming months and
should be completed approximately spring 2002.  

The Lawrence Transit System will begin re-routing for routes 7 and 8 on
Tuesday, September 3.  The only stop available east of Iowa will be on
the Wal-Mart service road.

Reroutes for both routes are as follows, from the first stop at Four
Wheel Drive and 33rd Street buses will travel south to the south-side
access of JC Penney, left (east) to Nieder Road, right to 34th Street,
left to Iowa, left (north) on Iowa to 33rd Street, right (east) to the
Wal-Mart service road, right (south) to pick up and drop off passengers.
Buses will continue south to 34th Street, west to Nieder Road,
continuing on the south-side JC Penney access to Four Wheel Drive and
north to the second stop and layover at Four Wheel Drive and 33rd
