Cities in Douglas County involved with transportation planning

(LAWRENCE, Ks) - Drivers today may be impatient with traffic at a few
spots along Sixth Street or 23rd Street. But what will happen to
traffic in the coming twenty years? Where will congestion develop? What
relief options will the community support? Widening? New roadways?
Shifting to other ways of getting around like transit or bicycles?

The Lawrence community is invited to give input on transportation issues
as part of the Transportation 2030 Plan update for Douglas County. A
committee of volunteers and city, county, state and federal staff is
working to plan for traffic volumes and flows in the future. In
Lawrence, congestion may be a concern. In Eudora, the issue may be how
well Church Street serves to connect Eudora to K-10 and in Baldwin City,
truck traffic on US - 56 Highway may be a concern.

Lawrence Mayor Sue Hack recently made this statement about completing
transportation planning for Douglas County, "Lawrence residents care
about transportation. They want to know we are planning for the future
with care and concern for tax dollars."

One of the Transportation 2030 committee members, Bob Johnson, Douglas
County Commission Chair, said "The product of good roadway planning is
better access for the entire county, including the rural areas as well
as the four cities. With the Transportation 2030 Plan we can focus on
the most important transportation needs."

The public is invited to drop by any time at any of three public open
house meetings. The Eudora meeting will be Tuesday, September 18 between
6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at Eudora City Hall, 4 E. 7th Street, with a
presentation at 7:00 p.m. The Lawrence meeting will be Thursday,
September 20, between 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Union Pacific
Depot, 402 N. 2nd Street, with a presentation at 5:00 p.m. The Baldwin
City meeting will be Tuesday, September 25 between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. at
the Baldwin High School, 415 Eisenhower, with a presentation at 7:00
p.m.

More information about the T2030 Plan, process, and opportunities for
public participation is available on the web site at
www.lawrenceplanning.org/t2030 . Individuals unable to attend the input
meetings may provide input through the comments form on the web site.
