REUNION CONCERT; CITY BAND TO HIGHLIGHT BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
LAWRENCE -A special concert will help celebrate Lawrence's 153rd
Birthday, 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the William Kelly
Bandstand, located in historic South Park, 1131 Massachusetts St.
The celebration will kick off with a reunion performance at 3:30 p.m. by
Paul Gray and the Gaslight Gang. The Lawrence City Band will then take
the stage at 4:30 p.m. with a special birthday concert featuring
soloists from both Free State High School and Lawrence High School
bands.
The city band, conducted by Robert Foster, will perform several numbers
including: the Star Spangled Banner, the commissioned piece by David and
Gunda Heibert for Lawrence's Sesquicentennial Celebration in 2004 -
Jubilation Overture, Dances with Wolves, Dixieland Jamboree, Stars and
Stripes Forever, the Lawrence Sesquicentennial March - composed by
Foster and several others.
The concert is sponsored by the City of Lawrence with assistance from
the Rice Foundation.
In the event of inclement weather, the concert will not be rescheduled.

OKTOBERFEST TRIP FOR SENIORS OFFERS DAY OF TRADITIONAL FUN
LAWRENCE - Join the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department in
celebrating Oktoberfest with a trip to Basehor, Kan., on Saturday, Oct.
13. Participants will depart at 11 a.m. from East Lawrence Recreation
Center, 1245 E. 15th St., and return to the center at 7 p.m.
Holy-Field Winery in Basehor is hosting the traditional German festival.
Participants will feel like they have been transported to Bavaria as
they enjoy German food and the lively music of the Festhaus Musikanten,
an authentic German wind orchestra that will play plenty of familiar
dance favorites.
This trip is open to people ages 50 and older, and costs $20. The fee
does not include dinner. Please register by Wednesday, Oct. 10.
To register, individuals may enroll online or visit a Lawrence Parks and
Recreation facility, including: the Community Building, 115 West 11th
St.; East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 East 15th St.; Holcom Park
Recreation Center, 2700 West 27th St.; Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center,
4706 Overland Dr.; Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St.; the
Administrative Offices, 947 New Hampshire St. or South Park Recreation
Center, 1141 Massachusetts St.
