Conserve Energy, Take the "T"

(LAWRENCE, KS) - On Saturday, Oct. 13, the Lawrence Transit System will
offer a free ridership day on the "T" to promote the Home Energy
Conservation Fair. Fares on all eight fixed-routes will be waived.

Last year, Americans saved 1.4 billion gallons of gasoline by riding
public transportation a record 10.1 billion times, according to the
American Public Transportation Association (APTA). Conserving gasoline
isn't the only benefit realized by those who choose public transit.

A recent study released by APTA showed that when considering household
actions that limit carbon dioxide (CO2), taking public transportation
can be a significant way of reducing this greenhouse gas. The study
suggested that if one solo commuter of a household switched their daily
driving to using public transportation, it could reduce the household
carbon footprint by 10 percent.

Route 6 Clockwise and Route 6 Counter-Clockwise provide direct access to
the Home Energy Fair at Free State High School. Both routes run on a
40-minute interval. Getting there on all other routes will require a
transfer. Riders will find that drivers are an excellent resource when
learning to ride public transportation and are encouraged to ask for
assistance.

The City of Lawrence invites area residents to learn about practical and
innovative ways to cut energy costs at the 7th Annual Lawrence Home
Energy Conservation Fair. The fair will be held on Saturday, October 13
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Free State High School, 4700 Overland Drive.
Admission to the fair is free.

Throughout the day there will be opportunities to view energy
conservation exhibits and talk with experts on how products and services
can lower utility bills and increase home energy efficiency. Exhibitors
include area builders, architects, insulators, heating and cooling
experts, government agencies, non-profits, and alternatively-fueled
vehicle representatives. Local businesses will have energy saving
products on site, including high efficiency windows, weather-stripping
and programmable thermostats. Westar Energy, an annual exhibitor, will
be giving away compact fluorescent bulbs.

The "T" operates from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday. To help
plan your trip or learn more about the routes, call (785) 312-7054 or
log on to www.lawrencetransit.org <http://www.lawrencetransit.org/> .
