Lawrence firefighter recognized for off duty actions
(LAWRENCE, Ks) - Lawrence Firefighter Tyler Tuckness will receive the
2007 Brain Saver Award on behalf of the American Heart Association.
Tuckness will receive the award and be honored on Thursday, October 4 at
the 10th Annual Stroke Symposium at 5:00 p.m. at the Sheraton, Overland
Park. Families and colleagues are invited to attend the awards ceremony
and reception.
Chief Mark Bradford nominated Firefighter Tuckness for the award
following his assistance to a shopper. While working on his off duty
day at a local electronics store, Tyler noticed a patron that was not
feeling well. Tyler went over to talk to the patron and noticed his left
arm and leg were extremely weak and the left side of his face was
drooping. Tyler insisted on calling an ambulance immediately. Tyler
recognized the symptoms of a stroke and had to convince the patron to be
transported.
Lawrence Memorial Hospital Emergency Department physicians also alerted
the on-call neurologist. Because of Tyler's quick reaction in initially
activating Emergency Medical Services and the actions of the physicians
and staff at LMH, the patron was able to leave LMH in four days with no
permanent physical disabilities and return to his job.
