LAWRENCE RECEIVES 29TH "TREE CITY USA" DESIGNATION, 15TH GROWTH AWARD
LAWRENCE -Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has been notified of
Lawrence once again being named a "Tree City USA" for 2007 by the
National Arbor Day Foundation for the 29th consecutive year.
Lawrence also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for the 15th
straight year for demonstrating progress in its community forestry
program in the areas of education, planning and management, park and
open spaces, partnerships and other areas related to developing a higher
level of tree care.
The Tree City USA designation has been given to the City of Lawrence
because it has met four standards, which are having a tree department, a
tree care ordinance, a comprehensive forestry program and having an
Arbor Day observance.
In 2006, Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department planted 986 new trees.
The department will celebrate through its annual tree planting on Arbor
Day. Details will be released closer to Arbor Day, which is Friday, Apr.
27.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day
Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State
Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. To become a Tree City USA, a
community must meet four standards: a tree board or department, a tree
care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor
Day observance.
