28TH ANNUAL FALL ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL TO BE HELD

 

LAWRENCE - The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department's Special Events
Division is hosting the 28th annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9, at South Park, 1141 Massachusetts
St. The event is free and open to the public.

Artists and craftsmen from across the region are scheduled to exhibit
their work.

There will also be special activities for children, including a moonwalk
and train rides. In addition, the children's wading pool will be open if
weather is favorable.

Musicians will also be performing on the William Kelly Bandstand
throughout the afternoon. Scheduled to perform are:

12 p.m. - Billy Spears & the Beer Bellies           

1 p.m. - Lonnie Ray Blues Band         

2 p.m. - Billy Ebeling & the Late for Dinner Band 

3 p.m. - Two Much Fun

4 p.m. - The Konza Swamp Band

TIME TO START TRAINING FOR THE MASS. STREET MILE

LAWRENCE - Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the Mass.
Street Mile at 10 a.m.  Sunday, Sept. 9. Runners will start at South
Park, 1141 Massachusetts St., and follow Massachusetts Street through
Downtown Lawrence.

Both adults and children are encouraged to enter. Awards will be given
to division winners and all entrants will receive a t-shirt. Cost to
participate is $12 for adults, $10 for children and $5 for walkers. 

 

Participants are asked to pre-register by Wednesday, Sept. 5, at any
Lawrence Parks and Recreation facility, including: the Community
Building, 115 West 11th St.; East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 East
15th St.; Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 West 27th St.; Lawrence
Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Dr.; Prairie Park Nature Center,
2730 Harper St. or South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Massachusetts St.
Registration can also be done online at www.lprd.org. 

Late and day-of-race registrations will be charged a $5 late fee.

Pre-registered participants may pick up their race packet and t-shirt
prior to the race at Francis Sporting Goods, 731 Massachusetts St., from
9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 6-7, and from 9 a.m. to 6
p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8. Packets will also be distributed from 9 to 10
a.m. at South Park on the day of the race.

SPOTS REMAIN IN FUN FALL CLASSES FOR KIDS

LAWRENCE - Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is continuing to
accept enrollment in several children's fitness, art and language
classes beginning soon.

 

Cheery O's, a class for ages 4-6, teaches basic cheerleading and
tumbling from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 11 through Oct. 30. The
cost is $27 per child. Kids will learn simple cheers, chants and dances,
which helps build coordination, balance and confidence.

 

Color My World, an art class for ages 2-4, allows children and their
parents or caregivers the opportunity to explore the wonderful colors of
the world together, without making a mess at home! Participants will use
a variety of materials including finger paints, temperas and waterclors
to create a variety of painted projects. Color My World is offered from
6 to 6:40 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 10 through Oct. 1. The cost is $22 per
child.

 

Fitness Fun, a fitness class for children ages 4-6 and their parents or
caregivers, teaches the basic motor skills necessary for sports
participation. Children will work on the mechanics of throwing and
catching, kicking techniques, hand/eye coordination and stretching.
Fitness Fun is offered from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 11 through
Nov. 1. The cost is $27 per child.

 

Hip Hop, a dance class for ages 7-11, is offered from 6:15 to 7:10 p.m.
Wednesdays, Sept. 12 through Nov. 7. Cost is $32 per child. This class
exposes kids of all skill levels to an original dance style that builds
confidence, cardio, strength, flexibility and coordination.

 

Kid's Sign Language teaches the alphabet, numbers, colors and many
vocabulary building signs to children ages 5-10. Kids will learn sign
language through songs, stories, games and other activities. Kid's Sign
Language is offered from 6 to 6:50 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 11 through Nov.
6. Cost is $32 per child.
