National award comes to City of Lawrence computer systems
(LAWRENCE, Ks) - The City of Lawrence was named a grand prize winner in
the public sector of the Cisco Growing with Technology Awards 2006.
Winners were announced Wednesday during a ceremony at the Hotel Valencia
in San Jose, Calif. In recognition of this award, the City of Lawrence
will receive $25,000 in Cisco products.
The City of Lawrence has used technology to interact with a public well
versed in computers and e-mail, an audience that instinctively relies on
reliable information systems. The city has increased online services,
increased 24 hour availability and increased self-help information to
meet citizens' needs. The city has secured online bill payments,
account lookups and service signups. To assist with collaboration and
dissemination of information, the City Commission agenda is online along
with all the supporting materials. The Parks and Recreation Department
has developed a website that offers online class catalogs, online
signups, up to the minute calendars, schedules, and team standings.
Sewer and water systems are also monitored through a network system.
The Cisco Growing with Technology Awards was created to recognize small
and medium-sized organizations that demonstrate how networking
technology solutions can effectively address business challenges. A
panel of 10 judges selected 15 winners in five categories from more than
400 applications.
"This year's winners have proven that there is a correlation between a
company's investment in networking technology and success," said Peter
Alexander, Vice President, Commercial Marketing, Cisco Systems. "The
City of Lawrence was selected because they stood out as an organization
that uses a network to create sustainable differentiation, while
improving operational efficiencies and effectiveness.
