Change your clock, change your battery
(Lawrence, Ks) - When the daylight saving times ends this Sunday,
Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical reminds residents to make another
change that could save their lives - changing the batteries in their
smoke alarms.
Only operating smoke alarms provide protection to residents. The most
commonly cited causes of non-working smoke alarms are worn or missing
batteries. Changing smoke alarm batteries at least once a year is one of
the simplest, most effective ways to reduce deaths and injuries from
fires. Additionally, the International Association of Fire Chiefs
recommends replacing your smoke alarms every ten years.
"Smoke alarm maintenance is a simple, effective way to reduce home fire
deaths. A working smoke alarm can give you the extra seconds needed to
get out," said Fire Marshal Rich Barr. In addition, Barr recommends
testing smoke alarms by pushing the test button, planning "two ways out"
and practicing escape routes with the entire family.
