WRITING TO BE AN ADVENTURE FOR PARTICIPANTS
LAWRENCE- Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department, Recreation
Instruction Division will offer Writing As An Adventure, a program to
enhance children's writing skills.
The class will meet Mondays, Oct. 30 through Dec. 4, from 6 p.m. to 7
p.m. at the South Park Recreation Center, Conference Room, 1141
Massachusetts St.
Writing As An Adventure is designed to bring out the author in children
ages 8 to 11 years old. Children will be taught how to create story
ideas and organize their thoughts in order to develop an entertaining
story. Children will get to highlight their most interesting story in
the final session.
Tom Mach, instructor of the course, will be donating his proceeds from
the class to both public and private elementary schools in Lawrence.
The cost of the class is $35.

CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN WITH LPRD ACTIVITIES
LAWRENCE-Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has several activities
planned to create safe Halloween fun for kids of all ages.
On Saturdays, Oct. 28, through Nov. 18, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Icky,
Slimy, Gooey will be held, at the Community Building, Art Room, 115 West
11th St. This class is available to children ages 4 to 6 years old, who
enjoy unique and creative hands-on art projects. Children will have the
opportunity to touch, squish, squeeze and explore icky, slimy and gooey
art experiments planned for each session. The cost of this class is $22.

On Saturday, Oct. 28, the 35th Annual Halloween Paint-In will be held in
Downtown Lawrence from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Children in third grade and
older are welcome to participate in this Lawrence tradition. Parks and
Recreation along with the Lawrence Breakfast Optimists Club and Downtown
merchants offer this opportunity to paint store fronts for the holiday.
An organizational meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m.
at Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St. Participants must
submit a sketch of their design by 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19. All
participants will receive a Halloween Paint-In T-shirt. Cost to
participate is $6. For more information, contact Duane Peterson, special
events supervisor, at 832-7940.
On Saturday, Oct. 28, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Spook N' Splash will be held
at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Dr. This
Spooktacular night will be filled with ghoulish games and piles of
prizes, mounds of treats and plenty of swimming. The night will begin
with a costume contest, which will look for the scariest, funniest and
most original costumes, so reserve your spot today. The cost to
participate is $3. The registration deadline is Thursday, Oct. 26.
On Saturday, Oct. 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the East Lawrence
Recreation Center parking lot, 1245 East 15th St., Trunk-or-Treat will
be held. LPRD along with the a LAZER 105.9 FM are looking for
individuals to decorate their vehicles trunk or hatch in order to
provide a safe trick-or-treating experience for kids. A contest will be
held for the best decorated trunk and costume. Hot dogs, chips and
drinks will be served at 6 p.m. and trick-or-treating will begin at 6:30
p.m. To reserve your parking spot or for additional information, contact
the East Lawrence Recreation Center at 832-7950.
On Sunday, Oct. 29, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Prairie Park Nature Center,
2730 Harper St., will host its annual Halloween Open House. The theme
for this year's open house is Pirates. Participants are asked to come in
costume. There will be free treats, a scavenger hunt and special animal
programs.
Parks and Recreation also encourages those wanting to participate in the
holiday on Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., (suggested
trick-or-treat hours), to turn on porch lights and invite Lawrence's
little goblins to homes across Lawrence.

are also safety tips for choosing a costume, trick-or-treating, candy
inspection and general safety tips for everyone to enjoy a safe
Halloween.
