Mayor looking for volunteers to serve on city advisory boards
(Lawrence, Ks) - Each year, hundreds of Lawrence citizens volunteer time and energy to review community issues and make recommendations to the City Commission. Appointed by the Mayor, advisory board members serve the City Commission by being experts in a specific area from bicycles to recycling and resource conservation. Boards advise and suggest methods or practices that meet the goals in an area.
The end of the year brings the expiration of some volunteer terms and the need to find new volunteers to get involved with the community. Currently 20 volunteers are needed to fill positions with city advisory boards and additional positions will be available in the coming four months. Mayor Mike Amyx is looking for citizens interested in serving on boards.
"The City Commission taps into the knowledge and work of advisory boards for information and suggestions that incorporate community input," said Mayor Mike Amyx. He continued, "I encourage people to get involved and consider lending their time and sharing their interest by serving on an advisory board."
The Contractor Licensing Board which has the responsibility of reviewing contractor licensing violations has nine vacancies. Created when the city implemented a contractors licensing program to establish and maintain a high standard of integrity, skill, and practice in the construction field, the board will work with Neighborhood Resources staff to review complaints about actions of licensed contractors. Board members will be from professional fields such as an architect, civil or professional engineer, licensed contractors and a member of the general public.
Appointments to city boards vary from two to four years. A majority of boards meet monthly with some tasks occurring outside the regular meetings.
