INPUT SOUGHT FROM PUBLIC REGARDING ATHLETIC FACILITIES
LAWRENCE - The Partners for Lawrence Athletics and Youth (PLAY)
committee will hold a public meeting to gather information regarding the
current state of athletic facilities in the community on Monday, Nov.
20, at 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.
Treanor Architects, who was awarded the contract to complete a needs
assessment and feasibility study to evaluate the need and potential
support for state-of-the-art competitive and recreational sports venue
in the community, will conduct the meeting.
The PLAY initiative was spearheaded earlier this year by Bonnie Lowe,
former Mayor and City Commissioner, who sought financial support for a
feasibility study to explore long-range planning and evaluation of
future sports complex development. In May, the 18-member PLAY committee
was formed with members from the City of Lawrence, U.S.D. 497, Douglas
County, the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and Lawrence community.
The objectives of the PLAY committee are to critically evaluate the
present state of athletic facilities and programs in Lawrence;
investigate the need and support for first-class sports/recreation
complexes in Lawrence and assist in building mutually beneficial
partnerships among user groups.
For more information, please contact Fred DeVictor, director of Parks
and Recreation, at 785-832-3450.
