Lawrence Parks and Recreation celebrating 60 years of service to the Lawrence Community in 2006

			1) Parks and Recreation Professionals Receive Awards At Conference

PARKS AND RECREATION PROFESSIONALS RECEIVE AWARDS AT CONFERENCE
LAWRENCE - Members of the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department staff received a number of awards at the Kansas Recreation and Park Association annual state conference in Overland Park, Kan., this week.

Receiving awards were: Mark Hecker, superintendent of Parks and Maintenance; Jo Ellis, recreation program supervisor, Jimmy Gibbs, aquatics division manager, Roger Steinbrock, marketing supervisor and the horticulture division, lead by Crystal Miles, the horticulture supervisor.

Hecker received the 2005 KRPA Distinguished Professional Award. He has been a member of KRPA for 26 years and served on a number of committees and has worked for Lawrence Parks and Recreation for 7 years.

Ellis received the KRPA Recreation Branch Service Award. She currently serves as a Board of Directors member for KRPA, has served as secretary/treasurer of the KRPA Recreation Branch, currently serves as president-elect of the KRPA Recreation Branch,  helped establish the Kansas City Metro Programmers Group and served as its president for 2 years. She has worked for Lawrence Parks and Recreation for 3 years. 

Gibbs received the KRPA Aquatics Branch Distinguished Aquatics Professional Award. Gibbs has served on several KRPA committees, the KRPA Aquatics Branch Board, a member of the Kansas City Metro Aquatics Council, is a past KRPA Aquatics Branch president and a past Kansas City Metro Aquatics Council president.   He has worked for Lawrence Parks and Recreation for 5 years.

Steinbrock received the KRPA Outstanding New Professional. He has worked on several KRPA committees. He received the department's Tom Wilkerson Teamwork Award in 2003 and has worked for Lawrence Parks and Recreation for 3 years. 

The horticulture division received the KRPA Parks and Natural Resources Branch Special Project /Design Award for the Japanese Friendship Garden. The Japanese Friendship Garden was developed to honor the 10-year anniversary of the relationship with Lawrence's sister city Hiratsuka, Japan.
