City launches conservation program with elementary students: Saving
water, one student at a time

(LAWRENCE, Ks) - The City of Lawrence Department of Utilities has
implemented the WaterWise(tm) program in Lawrence schools, giving
students the tools necessary to educate their families on water
conservation and benefiting the entire community.

The program teaches students and their families how to save natural
resources through a hands-on approach. During class, students and
teachers discuss the significance of water conservation through lesson
plans. At the end of the day, each child receives the WaterWise Resource
Action Kit containing a high-efficiency showerhead, kitchen and bathroom
sink aerators and tools for monitoring water usage at home. The
students take the kits home to share and install the products with their
families and in doing so reduce residential water use.

This program reduces water use and teaches students valuable lessons
they can use for the rest of their lives. The students concentrate on
learning how to conserve water, why it's important and what it means.
Next, students and their families get to see how easy conservation can
be. They learn how much money can be saved by installing the high
efficiency products provided in the program and learn new techniques to
assist in savings as well.

The immediate goal is a savings of over 6,800,000 gallons of water per
year - that's enough to fill over 27 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

In addition to water savings, students learn that they can take an
active role in saving other resources, including gas and electricity. It
is anticipated that during one year, families who install the products
will save an additional 151,000 kilowatt hours of electricity and 31,000
therms of gas.

Schools and teachers that have recently participated in the program are
