DEGHAND TO RECEIVE AWARD
LAWRENCE - Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department's Annette Deghand,
Special Populations Division supervisor, will receive an award from
Cottonwood, Inc. as part of their 5th Annual Cottonwood Classics, which
highlights community members who have contributed to the success of
their organization.
Deghand will be awarded the Community Partner Award during their annual
recognition ceremony on Monday, April 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the
Lawrence Free State High School auditorium.
Deghand has worked for Lawrence Parks and Recreation for nearly 15
years. In that time, she has developed award-winning programming for the
disabled. With many of the programs, she has integrated those with and
without disabilities to create awareness and understanding with all
participants.
"We are very proud to have Annette be recognized," Fred DeVictor,
director of Lawrence Parks and Recreation, said. "She's developed and
adapted award-winning programs, making them inclusive for participation
by both adults and children with and without disabilities. Annette is
most deserving of the award and has been a tremendous influence in her
clients' lives and is true asset to the department."
In 1996, the Douglas County chapter of the Association for Retarded
Citizens presented a Special Recognition Award for the Lawrence Parks
and Recreation's Unified Sports program. In 1997, the Unified Sports
program was recognized at the State level by the Association for
Retarded Citizens and also received an Outstanding Program Award by the
Kansas Recreation and Parks Association's Kansas Therapeutic Recreation
Society.
Deghand has been a member of the Kansas Recreation and Parks Association
since 1990 and served on the board of directors in 1995 and 1999. She
was a member of the National Recreation and Parks Association in 1996.
She has also been a member of the Transition Council of Douglas County
since 1991. In addition, she served as the local coordinator for the
Douglas County Special Olympics from 1991 to 2001 and the Special
Olympics Indoor Games from 1991 to 1997.

LAWRENCE A "TREE CITY USA" CITY FOR 28TH CONSECUTIVE TIME; RECEIVES 14TH
GROWTH AWARD
LAWRENCE -Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has been notified of
Lawrence once again being named a "Tree City USA" for 2006 by the
National Arbor Day Foundation for the 28th consecutive year.
Lawrence also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for the 14th
straight year for demonstrating progress in its community forestry
program in the areas of education, planning and management, park and
open spaces, partnerships and other areas related to developing a higher
level of tree care.
The Tree City USA designation has been given to the City of Lawrence
because it has met four standards, which are having a tree department, a
tree care ordinance, a comprehensive forestry program and having an
Arbor Day observance.
In 2005, Parks and Recreation have planted 1286 trees, planted 1587
shrubs, pruned 1815 trees and removed 751 trees throughout the City.
Activities are being planned to celebrate the achievement and will
culminate in the celebration of Arbor Day on Friday, April 28, with two
tree plantings by students at Sunflower Elementary School, 2521
Inverness Dr., at 2 p.m.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day
Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State
Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. To become a Tree City USA, a
community must meet four standards: a tree board or department, a tree
care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor
Day observance.
