Great Communities Workshop set for Thursday
 

(LAWRENCE, KS) - The City of Lawrence will host a Great Communities Workshop on Thursday.  Community stakeholders along with city, county and planning commissioners and USD 497 board members have been invited to learn from Bruce Appleyard.  An architect and urban designer from Portland, Oregon, Appleyard will share information on new urbanism and building great communities.

 

During the morning session, Appleyard will discuss visioning, the importance of visioning and share steps to implement the community building concepts.  In the afternoon, he will lead a hands-on session with stakeholders and city staff discussing topics such as connectivity, walkability, bikeability, access management and the role of design guidelines.  The day will wrap up with a reception for design professionals, professors and community leaders to meet Appleyard and talk about the ideas presented during the workshop.

Bruce Appleyard , MCP, AICP is a Senior Transportation Planner and Urban Designer with SERA, Inc. (www.serapdx.com), a multidiscipline design firm specializing in smart and sustainable design and planning. He has taught the graduate transportation and land-use planning courses at the University of Virginia and Portland State University, as well as workshops for the University of California and the National Center for Bicycling and Walking. He has served as a Planning Commissioner in Charlottesville, VA, and has written numerous articles for academic and practitioner audiences. He is currently working on the second edition of the bestselling PAS report, The Transportation and Land Use Connection, and the second edition of Livable Streets.
